The integral values of a for which the quadratic equation (x – a)(x – 10) + 1 = 0 has integral roots are

a. -1, 3
b. 2, 3
c. 12, 8
d. -8, -12

Suppose the quadratic has an integer root α, then we must have

[im]http://codecogs.izyba.com/gif.latex?%28%5Calpha-10%29%28%5Calpha-a%29%20%3D%20-1[/im] where both factors are integers

i.e one of the factors is 1 is -1. Their difference is 2.

Hence [im]http://codecogs.izyba.com/gif.latex?%7C10-a%7C%20%3D2%20%5CRightarrow%20a%3D8%2C12[/im]
